Our Downhill Session is a 1-hour lesson at 12:30pm on a National Level DH track with a experienced, globally accredited mountain bike instructor who also have many years of experience in downhill racing. The session has limited places in order to better facilitate participant experience and learning, as well as risk management. The Downhill session will originate with the Foundational skills required to safely and efficiently negotiate the Awaba DH track.
**This clinic is targeted at riders who already ride DH tracks, are racing the upcoming AusCycling State Gravity Rnd 6 and want to be familiar with the infamous Awaba “Monkey” DH track.**
Our Session is at 12:30pm for 1 hour in length give or take.
This is a group session for people from 13 yrs old and up. Each group may contain up to 3 riders maximum.
Learn what approach is required from the moment you get your bike off your car, right up to sending it off those A-line jumps and lines. We’ll work on mindset, thought processes and shaving milli-seconds as well as the usual Foundations, line choices and bike control techniques – especially important when increasing your speed!
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Our Downhill Session is all about helping you to develop and practice more advanced gravity downhill skills so you can confidently ride gravity style trails and start improving your gravity enduro and DH racing results.
Skills learned will include:
- Body position
- Advanced cornering quickly on flat turns and berms
- Dealing with rocks
- Drops
- Line choice & trail awareness
- Bike handling with more speed
- Descending
- Switchbacks
- Mindset – how the mentally approach techy sections
- Race skills
- Location-specific manoeuvres
Note: Session and program content may be altered at the coaches discretion for reasons of safety, weather, to better cater for the riders or other requirements.
IS THIS FOR ME?
I’m an average to intermediate Downhill rider and have decided to try increasing my speed and stepping it up more but…
“I need to learn to tackle some more challenging trail features.”
“I can’t hold my pace over roots and rocks well.”
“I struggle with my head.”
“I’m just slow downhill.”
“I ride/race DH regularly but want to learn what it takes to go overseas.”
“I lose my nerve when the trail heads downhill/steep, especially if it’s rocky”
“I already ride a lot but I’m not really getting better.”
If any of these statements sound like you then perhaps our Downhill Session is for you.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Mountain Bike – Your DH mountain bike will need to be suited to downhill riding and fitted with mountain bike tyres also suited to rough terrain. We strongly suggest using a tyre with an aggressive tread pattern and a minimum width of 2.3 inches. 2.5-2.8 is more common. Lightweight cross country, touring or semi-slick tyres are not suitable.
If you are unsure about any of this, please ask us.
We do ask that, to the best of your ability, that you try to ensure your bike is in good working and properly set up for your body shape and weight prior to the class. We cannot hold the class up to aid mechanical repairs. - Full Face Helmet (compulsory) – For many gravity enduro events compulsory, full-face helmets are enforced for good reason. You only have one head and face. For our Downhill class, you are required to wear a correctly fitting, Australian approved full face helmet during all sessions.
- Knee/Elbow Pads (compulsory) – All students will be required to wear extra protection in the form of hard or soft shell pads on both knees and elbows. You not only gain the protection but also the confidence that comes from knowing you have the protection. Gloves are also highly recommended.
